The Twister Special |
All the 1970 Twister Special's were built for, and sold exclusively by dealers within Ford's Kansas City District Sales Office (DSO 53), which in 1970 included Kansas, Missouri and the Northwest corner of Arkansas. The 1970 Twisters were a separate project utilizing the designs of the American Raceway Incorporated (ARI) pace cars. None of the pace cars were ever converted to Twister Special's as stated in some magazine articles and web sites. There were a nice array of cars including:
With a total of 96 Mustang Mach 1 Twister Specials in Grabber Orange, 90 Torino Cobra Twister Specials in Vermillion, and 2 Ranchero Twister Specials in Vermillion built, the 1970 lineup provides a glimpse into the raw power of what it took to become a Twister Special.

The Twister II Mustangs were created as a spinoff of the original Twister Special cars. To match the run of cars made prior, 90 additional Mustangs were made for this year. Like the initial runs, all 1985 Twister Special's were built for, and sold exclusively by dealers within Ford's Kansas City District Sales Office (DSO 53), which included Kansas, Missouri and the Northwest corner of Arkansas. In 1985 there were 90 Mustang GT Twister II's produced in four colors with some being hardtops and some being convertibles.
The Twister Special was brought back in 2008 to the Mustang GT with a new spin on the classic takes. The initial planned run of 96 - 2008 Mustang GT "Twister Special" cars came in both coupes and convertibles with new trim package ratings of EF1, EF2, EF3, EF4, and EF5 to mirror the levels of the Enhanced Fujita scale which ranks the strength of tornadoes based on the damage they cause. Although the run of cars was shortened to seventeen vehicles in total, like the Mustang Twister Specials of the 1970's they were available in Grabber Orange and sported a level of chaotic frenzy respective of their namesake.
